Vedic (Indian Astrology)

Vedic Astrology is practiced in India by our sages and this science is more than 5000 years old. As Vedic Astrology is originated in India, we will interchange Vedic and Indian astrology terms in our article.

Vedic astrology is the only area which involves various subjects like Hindi, Sanskrit ( All mantras are in Hindi and Sanskrit), History ( To know what our sages had said about astrology), Astronomy and Geography ( To know the position of stars ), Maths( To calculate Dasa and other things ).

Vedic Astrology is a science which can give us indications regarding our past, present and future lives such that we can alter our lifestyle accordingly for our betterment.

Indian astrology is based upon ascendant which is rising at that particular moment and then the chart is cast out and planets are placed accordingly in various zodiac signs and then predictions are done while following a lot of principles as laid down by our sages.

Indian astrology can show us path by which we can reduce our miseries and can strengthen our weaker periods with the help of remedies.

Houses in Indian ( Vedic Astrology )

In Indian Astrology, there are 12 houses that correspond to various areas of our life.

1^st house is the main house in Vedic Astrology. If the 1^st house is weaker in the chart, it will weaken entire horoscope as this is the base of any birth chart and when a base is weaker, then results will be weaker too. 1^st house is Trine house ( 1, 5 and 9^th houses are a trine house ) as well quadrant house (1st, 4th, 7^th and 10^th house are quadrant house ) and thus its weight is more than its counterparts. 1^st house is the house that signifies health, name, fame, natural characteristics of the person.

2^nd house is the house that signifies Finances, Investments, Speech, Eyes, Head, Eating habits, Jewelry, Shares, Stocks, memory, initial education and Family.

3^rd house is related to courage, confidence, stamina, communication levels, younger brother and sisters, change of residence, the signing of contracts, neighbors, short travels, hands and throat. This house is tridasya house ( 3^rd , 6^th and 11^th houses are tridasya houses in Indian astrology)

4^th house signifies immovable assets, domestic happiness, mother, native place and education matters too.

5^th house signifies Progeny, love affairs, higher education, competitions, Sports, artistic abilities, gambling, speculation and hoarding matters.

6^th house signifies diseases, services, employees, servants, debts, litigation, enemies, jealousy, intestinal problems and maternal uncles are represented by this house.

7^th house signifies spouse, marital llife, business partner, type of spouse, spouse characteristics, travels after marriage .

8^th house is the house of longevity , wills , inheritance , gratuity , miseries , dejection , frustration , thefts , obstruction and disappointments . This is Tic house( 6^th , 8^th and 12^th houses are tic houses – bad houses in Hindu astrology ) . In other words , it signifies problems and obstructions in one life .

9^th house is the Trine house and 1^st , 5^th and 9^th houses are the pillars of Hindu Astrology . If 1^st , 5^th and 9^th houses are stronger , then one with his/her efforts can reduce negativity of his/her life as this 3 houses are the base of the chart and when this houses are stronger , then one can rise in his/her life with his/her own efforts. 9^th house signifies spirituality, Father , wisdom , faith , pilgrimages and education related travels too. Affliction to this house can create pitra dosa , if Sun is also afflicted by natural malefic planets especially by Rahu , Ketu or Saturn.

10^th house is the house in relation to one profession, honour , dignity , name , status , promotion , higher posts as well as authority too .

11^th house is the house of friends , fulfillment of desires , elder brother , financial gains , success in business ventures and health recovery too as 11^th is the 6^th house from 6^th house which signifies “Health improvement “.

12^th house is the house of expenses and losses, charity, donations, secret enemies , health expenses , waste of money , uncontrollable expenses and foreign journeys too .

Zodiac Signs in Vedic Astrology

There are 12 signs in Hindu astrology . All planets except Rahu and Ketu had given atleast one lordship of particular sign in zodiac belt .

Aries : Aries is ruled by Mars . Aries is fiery sign . Presence of benefic Sun or Mars in this Sign will increase one confidence , stamina , energy , passion and one will be devoted to fulfill his/her pursuits and will never sit till the time , his/her goals do not get achieved . On the other hand , presence of Saturn which is its debilitation sign makes one lethargic . Nakshatras in Vedic (Indian ) Astrology

Ashwini : Ashwini nakshatra lord is Ketu . Persons born in this nakshatra are spiritual , physician , humble and have caring for others .

Bharini : Bharini nakshatra lord is Venus . Persons born in this nakshatra are creative , talented , lovable and affectionable .

Kritika : Kritika nakshatra lord is Sun . This nakshatra signifies battles and war . Person born in this nakshatra can become aggressive very easily but are born fighters and never say no to any work

Rohini : Rohini nakshatra lord is Moon . Moon is queen in Indian astrology. Persons born in this nakshatra are emotional , caring and get depressed very easily .

Mrigshira : Mrigshira nakshatra lord is Mars . Mars is commander –in –chief in Vedic astrology and thus signifies soldiers , army persons and other paramilitary forces of the country . All this significations are good profession for person born in this nakshatra.

Ardra : Ardra nakshatra lord is Rahu . Rahu is natural malefic planet and thus one born in nakshatra is bit materialistic and most of his efforts will be there to achieve materialistic gains . However benefic Rahu in chart will help native to get luxuries of life with ease in Rahu period .

With the help of nakshatras , match compatibility is being judged in Hindu Astrology . Muhuratha are also fixed with the help of nakshatras and without nakshatras , Vedic astrology will not able to work .

Planets in Indian Astrology:

There are 7 planets and 2 Nodes in astrology and as this planets move in various houses and signs , they cast there affects based on the placement , functional nature and aspects they get from various planets .

Sun : Sun is signified as King in astrology. Sun is the sign lord of Leo . Sun also signifies Profession , Father , Royal associations , Kingdom , Biles , Heart , head , Bones too . Sun is the functional benefic planet for Aries and Sagittarius ascendant and works well for Cancer, Taurus and Scorpio ascendant too but in this ascendant, its results mainly depends upon its placement and aspects that is getting in the chart. Sun is functional malefic planet for Gemini , Virgo , Libra and for Pisces ascendant .

Moon : Moon is natural benefic planet when it is in waxing phase where as it is malefic when it is in waning phase. Moon signifies Land, pastures , farms , ponds , lake , water , sea , mother , mental state of mind , domestic happiness , family travels . Moon is functional benefic planet for Cancer , Scorpio and for Pisces ascendant . Moon is neutral for Aries , Gemini , Libra , Sagittarius , Capricorn and its results will depend upon its placement and association in the chart . Moon is functional malefic planet for Taurus , Leo , Virgo and for Aquarius ascendant .

Mars : Mars is Commander-in-chief in astrology . Mars is also termed as malefic planet in astrology . Mars signifies brother , property assets , debts , aggression , courage , stamina , blood disorders , immunity , bone marrow , army , police , ammunitions, ordinance factories in astrology . Mars is functional benefic planet for Aries , Cancer , Leo , Sagittarius and for Pisces ascendant . Mars is neutral to Libra and Scorpio ascendant and give its results as according to placement and aspects it is getting in the chart . Mars acts as a functional malefic planet for Taurus , Gemini , Virgo , Capricorn and for Aquarius ascendant .

Mercury : Mercury is neutral planet in astrology and its results basically depends upon its association .Mercury signifies sisters, lawyer , stock market , trade , accounts , intellect and education matters too. It becomes benefic planet when it is associated with benefic planets and becomes malefic planet , when it is associated with malefic planets . As according to functional nature of Mercury is concerned , it is functional benefic planet for Taurus , Gemini , Virgo , Libra , Capricorn ascendant . It is neutral to Sagittarius , Aquarius and for Pisces ascendant and give its results as according to its association in chart . Mercury is malefic for Aries , Cancer , Leo and for Scorpio ascendant.

Jupiter : Jupiter is natural benefic planet in Vedic astrology. Jupiter signifies progeny matters , wealth , luck prospects , education , travels and family happiness too . Jupiter is functional benefic planet for Aries , Leo , Scorpio , Sagittarius and for Pisces ascendant . It acts as neutral planet for Gemini , Cancer and for Virgo ascendant and gives its results as according to its placement and its association in the chart. Jupiter acts as functional malefic planet for Taurus , Libra , Capricorn and for Aquarius ascendant .

Venus : Venus is natural benefic planet in Indian Astrology . Venus signifies love matters , financial gains , luxurious items , happiness . Venus is functional benefic planet for Gemini , Virgo , Libra , Capricorn and for Aquarius ascendant . It acts as a neutral planet for Aries and for Taurus ascendant and gives results as according to association and placement . Venus is functional malefic planet for Cancer , Leo , Scorpio , Sagittarius and for Pisces ascendant .

Saturn : Saturn is most malefic planet in Indian astrology . Saturn signifies old age , depression , sorrow , frustration , delays , dejections , mines . It gives results as according to one deeds. Saturn is functional benefic planet for Taurus , Gemini , Libra , Capricorn and for Aquarius ascendant natives . Saturn is neutral planet for Virgo ascendant . Saturn is functional malefic planet for Aries , Cancer , Leo , Scorpio , Sagittarius and for Pisces ascendant . Here Sade Sati effects will be more for those ascendants for whom Saturn is functional malefic planet.

Rahu & Ketu : Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets and do not own any sign . However , Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Ketu is exalted in Scorpio and Rahu is debilitated in Scorpio and Ketu in Taurus . In birth chart they always remain 180 degrees from each other . Rahu and Ketu generally give results as according to the associating planets and condition of dispositor planet ( Sign lord of the planet where Rahu or Ketu is placed ) . Rahu and Ketu generally give good results when they are placed with functional benefic planet for particular ascendant in good houses and there dispositor is placed in good houses too with aspects of functional benefic planets in chart.

Shadbala strength in Vedic Astrology

This is very broad topic that cannot be discussed here but still on shorter note , this is the measurement criteria for looking out planetary strength for each planet .Through this criteria , we will able to judge that planet will able to give its results in signification manner or not . If planet is getting lower points in Shadbala , even if it is functional benefic planet for particular ascendant , one cannot get full results of that functional planet natural and functional significations in chart . On smaller note , shadbala strength compromises of whether planet is posited in exalted , friendly sign , own sign , enemy sign . What is planetary directional strength, chesta bala etc which are used in judging strength of concerned planet.

Vimpoksa bala in Indian Astrology:

This is again another criteria which signifies planetary strength but with the help of divisional charts .Here strength of planet is measured in various divisional charts and all standard rules will be applied in studying divisional charts . If planets is placed favorably in various divisional charts , then its strength will be quite good to give its results .

Planets degrees in Vedic astrology :

Here planets degrees had to be looked to see whether planet will be able to give its full results or not . Planet which is in 0-6 degrees for odd sign is in “Baal Avastha “ and hence will not able to give results properly . Planets which is in 6-12 degrees will be in “Kishore Avastha “ and will able to give results quite better . Planets placed in 12-18 degrees will be in “Yuva Avastha “ and will able to deliver results as according to the functional or malefic significations according to particular ascendant and in this degrees ,planet is quite powerful to give its results . Planets placed in 18-24 degrees will not able to give results fully as planet is in “Vrid Avastha”. Planets placed in 24-30 degrees is in “mrit avastha “ and hence will not able to deliver its results. In case planets , placed in even signs , in 0-6 degrees , planet is in “Mrit Avastha “ , 6-12 degrees , planet is in “Vrid Avastha” , 12-18 degrees , planet is in “Yuva Avastha “ , 18-24 degrees , planet is in “Kishore Avastha” and in 24-30 degrees ,planet is in “Baal Avastha” .

Divisional charts in Indian Astrology

Birth chart is the main chart that tell us various significations of our life but that significations had to be tested in various divisional charts in order to say anything about that particular area significations that how stronger that particular significations is in other chart like:

Navmasa chart

This is major and important chart to look out general strength of planets in D9 chart . Further , this chart is looked to check significations of marital life as well as spouse significations too in the chart .For ex- if Jupiter is weaker in birth chart but gaining strength in positive way in D-9 chart , then with the help of remedies , Jupiter will give its positive results in main period of Jupiter with the sub period of other functional benefic planet for that ascendant.

Dasamsa chart

This chart is used for testing professional prospects for the native .

Saptamsa chart

This chart is used to test progeny prospects.

Drekkana chart

This chart is used to study relations with brothers and sisters.

Dwadsamsa chart

This chart is used to look about parents.

Chaturvimsamsha chart

This chart is used to look out education prospects.

Shadosamsha chart

This chart is used to test conveyance prospects.

Ashtakvarga concept in Indian Astrology

For predictions , we had to look Vimshottari dasa as well as transits . Ashtakvarga concept is again very broad concept but on shorter note , this chart is basically used to see strength of planets in various houses while transiting in birth chart . Here , Rahu and Ketu are not included in list of planets . If planet is giving below 4 points out of 8 , it means ,planets results will be below average .If 4 points , then that planet results in that house will be average and above 4 points , means planet results in that house will be above average and is generally good for the native , provided that planet is functional benefic and is gaining strength in chart.

Muhuratha in Vedic Astrology

For fixing Muhuratha , lot of things are analyzed like :

Tithi : Here in this section , there are rikta tithis that had to avoided for any auspicious work.

Nakshatra: Here , there are specific set of nakshatra for doing specific things like Punarvasu nakshatra is good for worship , Chitra nakshtra is good for surgery and so on and so forth , which had to be looked in order to fix muhuratha

Vaar : It means day . For ex- Thursday will be good for worship rituals . Tuesday will be good for Surgery.

Karana :Here again , Karana is divided into two halves .In this , there are lot of karana that had to be avoided . “Vishti “ is the karana especially that had to be avoided for doing all auspicious work.

Yoga : In this section , again we had to look yoga that are good for particular day. This yoga forms by combining longitudes of Sun and Moon for any auspicious activities.

Rahu Kaal : This time is bad time which had to be avoided for doing any auspicious work

Apart from this , there are other parameters like chaturmas months , Chandra bala , Tara bala that had to be looked as well before fixing any day for auspicious things.
